Sailing a large cat is unlike any other sailing you've ever done. The following are a few examples:
- The speeds are double what you are generally used to
- The feedback from the motion of the boat is entirely different
- The apparent wind is constantly moving forward
- The trick on the bay is to slow down and reef down
- Vmg is king (reach off don't point up)
- Tacking 7 batten main with a full roach and 20' foot is thought provoking each time you come about.
- At most points of sail the headsail is more decorative than functional
- Parking with twin engines 20' apart requires practice, patience, and technique
- Trim (boat and sail) and weight make a huge difference in performance
We have thousands of miles behind the wheel of Cat Ballou and a U.S. Coast Guard Masters Certificate. Showing you the ropes would be our pleasure. If you prefer we can prepare and send you a course syllabus that is made to your specifications. The cost for lessons is the hourly boat expense plus the cost of a licensed captain.
